The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index slid during the trading week, down 17.92 points, or 1.8% to 937.41, despite strong jobs data.
Canada’s unemployment rate remained at 6.9%, while the U.S. created a surprising 204,000 jobs last month, well above the expected 125,000. But the jobless rate crept up to 7.3% from 7.2%, mainly due to the U.S. federal shutdown in October, where 80,000 workers took a 16-day unpaid leave.
Toronto-based Xmet was one of the top-percentage gainers, jumping 150% to 3¢ after announcing it has acquired the Blackflake project near Zenyatta Ventures’ Albany graphite discovery in northeastern Ontario. Xmet says Blackflake has a “strong potential to host a high-purity hydrothermal vein-type graphite deposit, similar to Zenyatta’s recent discovery.” Xmet intends to initiate an airborne electromagnetic survey on Blackflake shortly.
Majescor Resources completed a 10-for-1 share consolidation on Nov. 7, likely to improve its flagging share price. It ended the week up 140% at 12¢. Majescor holds exploration projects in Madagascar, Haiti and Quebec.
Kennady Diamonds led the value gainers, climbing 40¢ to $6.55 on no news. Its latest announcement came in October, when it closed a $5-million bought-deal private placement of flow-through shares.
Junior producer Avino Silver & Gold Mines got a share-price boost, adding 23¢ to $1.40 after releasing positive results from sampling along Level 5 of the San Gonzalo vein. Its San Gonzalo mine is on the Avino property near Durango, Mexico. The sampling shows higher silver and gold grades, and improved vein continuity.
North Arrow Minerals rose after unveiling diamond results from the Pikoo project in Saskatchewan. On Nov. 5, the firm reported that a 209.7 kg sample from the PK150 kimberlite produced 745 diamonds larger than the 0.106 mm sieve size, including 23 diamonds larger than the 0.85 mm sieve size. More than 95% of the diamonds are described as “intact white octahedrons and aggregates.” North Arrow finished up 20¢ at 60¢. It climbed another 28%, or 17¢, to close Nov. 11 at 77¢.
Discovery Ventures was one of the week’s most traded stocks, with 8.5 million shares changing hands, after reporting that it intends to take over a subsidiary of Roca Mines, and has lined up a $2-million, non-brokered private placement that could help fund the proposed $5.7-million transaction. The acquisition would give Discovery the Max mine property, which includes the past-producing underground molybdenum mine and processing facilities in B.C., among other assets. The company closed down 1¢ at 22¢.
