TSX Venture Exchange, July 29-Aug. 2

The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index put an end to its four-week winning streak, slipping 1.73 points during the trading session to close at 923.56 points.

The spot price of gold lost US$20.30 per oz. to US$1,313.50, before the civic holiday long weekend observed in most of Canada.

During the period, Fission Uranium and its joint-venture partner Alpha Minerals released two more holes from the 2013 mid-year drill program at their Patterson Lake South uranium project in Saskatchewan’s Athabasca basin. The holes were drilled on the R390E zone to test the eastern and western extensions and both hit mineralization, with one of the holes returning the best intercept to date with 21.6 metres of off-scale radioactivity in several intervals, including 16.7 metres of continuous mineralization starting at 73.5 metres depth. The two holes also expanded the strike length of the zone to 105 metres, marking a 75% increase from early this year.

Fission — which was one of the most actively traded stocks, with 9.9 million shares traded — closed off 8¢ at 97¢. Project operator Alpha ended down 27¢ at $5.33, as nearly 823,000 shares changed hands.

Edmonton-based aggregate junior Athabasca Minerals added 46¢ to its share price, reaching $1.18 after posting record second-quarter revenues of $6.3 million, compared to $3.2 million a year ago. Other highlights for the three months ended May 31 included $3.8 million in net aggregate sales, $847,445 in net income and 3¢ per share in earnings, compared to $443,705 in net sales, $721,252 in net income and 2.6¢ per share in earnings in the same period last year.

Shares of Kennady Diamonds advanced 32¢ per share to $2.02 on no news. The week before, Kennady had announced the first infill hole from its mid-year exploration program at the Kennady North diamond project in the Northwest Territories. The hole returned 73 metres of kimberlite at the north lobe at Kelvin, one of the three known kimberlites on the project. The hole was drilled to a 262-metre depth and was one of the eight holes planned at Kelvin’s north lobe. More recently, on Aug. 6, the Toronto-based explorer reported core results from the project’s Kelvin and Faraday kimberlites that were recovered early last year. The 1.1-tonne sample graded 8.44 carats per tonne, with the largest diamond from the batch being a 2.48-carat, off-white transparent octahedral. Kennady ended Aug. 6 up 41% at $2.85 per share.
