TSX Venture bounces back, Aug. 18-22

VANCOUVER — The S&P/TSX Venture Composite returned to the black after three consecutive weeks in the red during the Aug. 18-22 trading period, as it gained 9.7 points to 1,005.58. Precious metal and energy futures retreated during the week, while base metals were on the rise. Meanwhile, minutes from the latest U.S. Federal Reserve meeting indicate that the U.S. central bank is in no rush to hike rates, and HSBC’s manufacturing index for China fell to a three-month low in July.

December contracts for gold bullion dropped 2% or US$26 before closing out the week at US$1,280.20 per oz. December contracts for copper jumped 3.1% or US9.7¢ before closing at US$3.20 per lb.

Ascot Resources led the value-added category after providing an exploration update at the historic Premier gold mine in B.C.’s Cassiar mining district. Shares gained 46¢ on 1 million traded before closing the period at $1.85. On Aug. 22 Ascot reported that historic work and recent drilling at Premier indicate a system where mineralization is focused in a structural zone with widths ranging from 30 to 150 metres, with a known strike length of over 1.6 km and a dip length of up to 1.2 km.

Pacific Booker Minerals was atop the value-lost column after receiving bad permitting news. Shares dropped 80¢ during the week to $4.10. On Aug. 19 B.C. Minister of Environment Mary Polak suspended the environmental assessment of Pacific Booker’s Morisson copper–gold project in B.C. The suspension was imposed due to the Aug. 4 tailings dam breach at Imperial Metals’ Mt. Polley copper-gold mine, which is the subject of an engineering investigation and independent review panel. According to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Act, the minister can suspend an assessment until the “outcome of any investigation, inquiry, hearing or other process that is material to the subject assessment.”

Fission Uranium led the volume-traded category for the week with 12.2 million shares moving, as shares  fell 11¢ to $1.17. On Aug. 18 Fission announced a $12.5 million bought-deal private placement wherein it will issue 8.35 million flow-through shares at  $1.50 per share. The company also reported results from a summer drill program at its Patterson Lake South (PLS) high grade uranium discovery near the Athabasca Basin. Highlights include 11 metres of total composite “off-scale” radioactivity in hole 14-259. Due to drilling success to date at the R780E zone Fission is adding another ten holes totalling 4,700 additional metres to its program.
