Toronto Stock Exchange December 12-18

The report period ended Dec. 18. saw a surge in trading that pushed the S&P-TSX Composite Index above 13,000 for the first time ever on Dec. 14, but ending the period down 92.98 points at 12,785.20.

To suit a beefed-up list that now includes non-Canadian gold companies not traded in Canada, the S&P-TSX Capped Gold Index was renamed the S&P-TSX Global Gold Index on Dec. 18. The list was increased to 30 gold mining companies from 18 and now includes the world’s second, third and fourth-biggest gold producers: Denver, Colo.-based Newmont Mining, South Africa-based AngloGold Ashanti and South Africa-based Gold Fields. The world’s biggest gold miner, Toronto-based Barrick Gold and the third-largest producer by market capitalization, Vancouver-based Goldcorp are among the 22 companies headquartered in Canada that remain on the list. Two companies dropped from the index were Southwestern Resources and Jim Sinclair’s Tanzanian Royalty Exploration.

The week’s most-active stock was J.C. Potvin’s Tiomin Resources, which saw more than 36 million shares trade hands before closing down half a cent at 14.5. On Dec. 12, Tiomin reported that construction of its Kwale mineral sands project in Kenya would be delayed until the Kenyan government “resolves all land-related issues, provides access to the project site and fulfills remaining conditions” required by various contractual arrangements. However, at presstime, Tiomin shares were up 24% on news that the Kenyan courts had ruled in favour of Tiomin and the Kenyan government and had dismissed all petitions from the seven farmers who are opposed to the government-approved compensation agreement for the acquisition of their land.

The week’s top percentage gainer was Toronto-based Orvana Minerals. With its flagship Don Mario mine in Bolivia reporting record production of 80,028 oz. gold for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, Orvana enjoyed record profits of US$15.7 million (US14 per share) on revenue of US$44.9 million for the year, up from US$8.9 million and US$29.4 million, respectively, the previous year.

In other breaking news, Tiberon Minerals reported that a major shareholder, private-equity firm Dragon Capital Management, was bidding $251 million, or $3.65 per share, for the 87.8% of the company it didn’t already own. Dragon Capital plans to go forward with Tiberon’s development plans for the substantial Nui Phao tungsten-fluospar deposit in Vietnam.

Ascendant Copper was the biggest percentage loser, down 30% to 51, as it continued to battle with anti-mining NGOs. The company has two issues at play at its Junin copper project in Ecuador: the approval of its environmental impact statement for exploration at Junin; and its efforts to conduct non-mining related agricultural activities on surface properties that are legally owned by the company.
