A panel of industry experts including a federal politician and a high-profile aboriginal leader will speak at the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum’s (CIM) conference and exhibit in Toronto.
This year’s conference, which runs from May 10-13, will focus on Canada’s global impact on the mining and minerals industry.
The panel for the plenary session includes: Lisa Raitt, Canada’s minister of natural resources; Phil Fontaine, national chief, Assembly of First Nations; Ian Pearce, CEO Xstrata Nickel; Jim Gowans, president and CEO, De Beers Canada; Tony Hodge, president, International Council on Mining and Metals; and Engin Ozberk, vice-president, innovation and technology development, Cameco.
Gowans, who is also president of the CIM, says that due to their diverse backgrounds, the panelists carry a range of perspectives on everything from social responsibility to skills development.
“We bring unique and varied ideas of Canada’s current role in a changing global economy, and ideas of what it should be,” Gowans said in a statement.
The plenary session will be held at 9 a. m. on Monday, May 11, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and will be moderated by CBC commentator Rex Murphy.
In addition to the plenary session, the conference will also include the Second International Mine Managers Conference, the 20th Canadian Rock Mechanics Symposium, and the first Mining Finance and Management day, which will feature a series of expert-led sessions exploring the inter-dependency of technical, operational and financial aspects of mining.
