The 2024 Young Mining Professionals Scholarship Fund has awarded a total of $225,000 to students pursuing mining-related programs at post-secondary institutions across Canada.

“This year, a record 30 mining companies and other sponsors rallied to the cause of nurturing the development of new talent for the mining industry,” said Anthony Moreau, director of the fund and CEO of American Eagle Gold (TSXV: AE; US-OTC: AMEGF).

The fund awarded 63 scholarships ranging in value from $500 to $15,000. Among them were several scholarships specifically targeting women, Indigenous students and residents of Northern communities.

A total of 3,189 applications were submitted, testifying to the popularity of the program, organizers said. Successful applicants are considered based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and a commitment to a career in the mining industry.

Employment gap

“The biggest challenge for our industry, by far, is people,” Moreau said. “The YMP Scholarship Fund enables the Young Mining Professionals organization, with support from its generous sponsors, to identify and reward emerging talent by easing their financial burdens. It’s not just about attracting young talent to the industry, it’s about retaining them and ensuring they stay within our industry. The doors that these scholarships open help with that.

“Many of our sponsoring mining companies use the scholarship program to hire summer interns and build relationships with students for eventual full-time employment, benefitting both the students and mining companies.”

Barrick Gold (TSX: ABX; NYSE: GOLD) said it is proud to support the scholarship fund.

“Investing in the next generation of leaders is crucial for the future of our industry,” the company said. “This initiative has not only allowed us to identify and recruit exceptional talent for Nevada Gold Mines, but also ensures we are fostering a pipeline of skilled professionals who will drive innovation and sustainability in mining. By supporting programs like this, we’re helping to shape a diverse and dynamic workforce that will secure the long-term success and growth of our industry.”

ResourceTalks.com, a forum featuring industry experts, said it was happy to support the cause.

“Mining is a challenging and high-risk industry that demands a lot from the people in it, and we believe it’s important to give back where we can, ResourceTalks’ Antonio Atanasov said.

“By helping students in mining-related programs across Canada, the fund plays a key role in preparing the next generation to face the complexities of this field with the knowledge, resilience, and passion it takes to succeed. It’s an honor to contribute, even in a small way, to something that helps build a stronger future for our industry.”

2018 founding

The fund, Canada’s largest scholarship fund for students in mining-related programs, was established in 2018 by the Ore Group and Iamgold (TSX: IMG; NYSE: IAG) with a mere $12,000 awarded to students. The number of sponsors and the value of scholarships awarded has steadily increased since then.

“Nurturing emerging talent is an important aspect of what we can do as a responsible mining company,” said Renaud Adams, president and CEO of Iamgold.

“That’s precisely what we’ve been doing as a proud supporter of the Young Mining Professionals Scholarship Fund since its inception. Through the fund, we’ve had the opportunity to support exceptional candidates as they seek to build a career in our industry and shape its future.”

The scholarship fund is a registered Canadian charity offering tax receipts to participating donors.

Every dollar contributed by the sponsors goes to the scholarship winners as the program is administered entirely by volunteers.
