Year end start at Puffy

The town of Sherridon, Man., will get a major boost this year when Pioneer Metals Corp’s Puffy Lake mine, 20 km south of the town goes into production in December.

Construction of the mine is well under-way and when completed will employ 100 people, most of whom will live in Sherridon.

In a joint statement, the Hon Elijah Harper, Manitoba Minister of Northern Affairs and Robert Willis, president and chief executive officer of Pioneer Metals, said the province and Pioneer will work together over the next several months to plan and develop new town facilities, employee housing and upgrading of the town water and sewer facilities. In addition the province wi ll seek ways to upgrade the road into the community.

“The mine will bring renewed prosperity to the region,” said Mr Harper, “and will create jobs for the residents of the town.” Since the Sherritt Gordon mine closed in 1952, the town has lacked a major industrial base.

Mr Willis said he welcomes the opportunity of working with the government in planning and development of new facilities.

He noted that construction of the mine is on schedule with foundations for the mills in place and erection of steel to commence next week.

When complete, the mill will process 1,000 tons of ore per day with an expected mine life of eight years. However, Mr Willis noted that exploration drilling is continuing and new reserves are being added.
