The growth of the Asian titanium market and a renewed demand for titanium pigment have pushed up demand for the metal.
According to a new study, The Economics of Titanium Minerals and Pigments 1996, the major market for titanium oxide pigment (which is derived from rutile) is the paints and coatings industry, though its use in Asia’s plastics sector is increasing. The use of titanium oxide in printing inks, electronics, ceramics and textiles is also increasing.
World consumption is expected to rise to 4.5 million tonnes per year by 2005.
The report, published by London-based Roskill Information Services, examines 41 countries and 35 major producers and analyzes various aspects of the titanium market. These include: trends in feedstock supply; the rise in the use of titanium slag; markets for titanium minerals; effects of legislative controls on pollution; ownership; growth rates for pigments, according to end-use and region; import and export figures; and price forecasts.
