Denver — An underground contract worker for Thyssen Mining Construction was killed at Stillwater Mining’s platinum-palladium mine in southwestern Montana.
The miner was struck by underground mining equipment operated by another employee. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died.
The recent accident is being investigated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). It is the third fatality at the mine this year.
Meanwhile in northern Idaho, the MSHA is investigating a rock burst that killed two miners at the Galena mine of Coeur d’Alene Mines.
The accident occurred in a stope 4,600 ft. below the surface. The last rock burst at the mine occurred in late 1998, injuring two.
