From Sept. 8–9 in Toronto, 10 women representing Women in Mining will participate in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers benefiting the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.
The weekend event is part of the “Believe It!” campaign that the foundation launched in April to raise $1 billion in five years, and conquer cancer in “our lifetime.”
Team members will each walk 60 km in two days with thousands of other women and men. In the past five years the WIM team has raised over $400,000.
The 10 members have committed to raising at least $2,000 each, but they hope to raise between $75,000 and $100,000 as a team by reaching out to mining companies for donations.
The proceeds will support breast and gynecologic cancer research, treatment and services.
WIM will be publicizing corporate sponsors on their shirts during the walk, and on the WIM Toronto branch website and during WIM lunches.
According to WIM, approximately 23,400 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and about 5,100 will die from the disease. Additionally, more than 8,000 Canadian women will be diagnosed with ovarian, cervical, or uterine cancer this year, and nearly 3,000 will die from one of these diseases.
Donations can be made online at endcancer.ca/goto/women-in-mining.
