Women geoscientists form new chapter

The Canadian Cordillera Chapter of the Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) will co-sponsor a short course during this year’s Cordilleran Round-Up week, Jan. 25-29.

The short course, “Consulting Strategies for Geoscientists,” will be held Jan. 25 at Simon Fraser University’s downtown campus. Speakers will discuss both technical and business strategies that pertain to various geoscience disciplines.

The chapter will have a booth during Roundup week, where it plans to initiate a directory of geoscientists available for employment. A mentoring program will also be initiated to bring together recent graduates and full-time professionals in both the mineral resource and environmental industries. “The current job market leaves many talented geoscientists with little professional advancement, sense of direction, or prospect of a career,” said Anne Thompson, a founding member. “We hope to fill a portion of this gap by providing professional development and new career path options. Our premise is that the advancement of women in geoscience will advance geoscience as a whole.”

The group also hopes to recruit new members, to add to the 38 women and men who have joined since the chapter was formed last spring. (Men are welcome.)
