What’s New NEW BUCKET TEETH

Esco Ltd. of Scarborough, Ont., is marketing a new steel tooth for bucket wheel excavators. Using a casting technique developed at the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology’s Physical Metallurgy Research Lab in Ottawa, Esco can now hard-face bucket teeth with powdered metal carbides while the tooth is being cast.

The new casting technique, called CANMETCOAT, replaces the old two- step technique of welding hard-facing to the tooth after it has been cast in a sand mold.

At Syncrude’s oil sands pit in Fort McMurray, Alta., where CANMETCOAT has been tested, teeth manufactured using the old technique typically lasted for only 1 1/2 shifts. Contrariwise, the new teeth last for about 2 1/2 shifts, depending on digging conditions. Esco is now supplying the teeth to Syncrude.

Esco has offices in Port Hope, Ont., and Port Coquitlam, B.C.
