WHAT’S NEW Electronic Diesel Engine Control

Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors and Delco Electronics have developed a new electronicunit fuel injection and engine management system. Features of this second-generation system include: * ease of reprogramming without any hardware changes or microprocessor chip replacements; * an enhanced diagnostic data logging system that stores historic diagnostic codes for engine speed, oil pressure, coolant level, oil temperature and injectors function; * an optional engine management system that provides the capability to track and monitor total engine hours and total fuel consumed; * a new, low-cost, hand-held programmer and diagnostic analyser that makes troubleshooting easy and reduces maintenance time and cost; and * a single box design for ease of serviceability and reliability. Two recipients of the 1987 Canada Awards for Business Excellence are Calgary-based Fording Coal and the Noranda Research Centre in Pointe-Claire, Que. They were selected as 1987 silver award winners from a total of close to 700 applicants across eight performance categories. The awards were created in 1984 by the federal government to honor outstanding achievements in productivity, performance and innovation.
