WHAT’S NEW DRILLING EQUIPMENT Clean Diamond Drilling

Bradley Bros. of Noranda, Que., has developed a pollution control system that it says satisfies every environmental regulation concerning pollution control in all Canadian provinces. Developed for two specialized deep drilling projects in Iceland and on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, the closed circuit waste control system is now being used to drill from the shore of Lake Dufault in northwestern Quebec — the source of drinking water for three municipalities.

The system features settling sumps to contain drilling sludge and the recirculation of drill water from these sumps. Return drilling fluid is circulated through a series of sludge pans and gravel-settling tanks for purification. Sludge is regularly cleaned from the tanks and disposed of at an approved on-shore dump. The company uses Quik Trol, or GS-550, a non-contaminant drilling fluid lubricant instead of normal rod grease. Drip pans are used extensively under all equipment to retain machine oil or drill fluid run-off.
