In our January issue we announced that Wagner Mining Equipment of Portland, Ore., is marketing an electrical-powered scoop equipped with a 1/2-cu-yd bucket and a diesel-powered scoop of the same size. In so doing, we may have left some readers with the impression that the scoop was developed by Wagner and John Clark, another scoop manufacturer. In fact, both manufacturers offer an electric- powered scoop with a 1/2-cu-yd bucket. Equipment Minere, a third manufacturer, based in France, has been marketing an electric scoop with a 1/2-cu-yd bucket since 1979. It is being marketed in Canada by Teledyne Mining Products in Sudbury. Equipment Minere’s unit is called the Microscoop, Jack Clark’s is called the Mini-Miner and Wagner’s is called the MINISCOOP.
Esco Ltd. of Scarborough, Ont., has tested a new steel tooth for bucket wheel excavators but wants to test the teeth under tough, winter conditions at Syncrude’s oil sands mine in Fort McMurray, Alta., before mass-producing and marketing the new teeth. Esco must also negotiate a licensing contract with the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology, which developed the canmetcoat technology used to hardface the teeth, before the teeth can be marketed. In our February issue, we mistakenly stated the teeth are already on the market.
