Westray section to be investigated

The Nova Scotia government says that the section of the Westray coal mine where a methane explosion in May that killed 26 men is thought to have originated will be examined by investigators.

Flooding intended to stabilize the Plymouth mine had earlier been put on hold while the government considered a request by Westray Coal to allow investigators into the southwest section.

To facilitate the investigation, ventilation will be established to the southwest section. The ventilation work will take about six weeks to complete. Representatives of the labor department, the public inquiry into the blast, the RCMP, the miners’ safety committee and Westray will make up the investigation team.

A public inquiry into the explosion is expected to begin hearings in the autumn.
