Westmin updates reserves

Year-end reserves at the Myra Falls mine near Campbell River, B.C., were slightly higher than in the previous year-end period, reports owner Westmin Resources (TSE).

The proven and probable geological figure at the end of 1994 stood at 12.5 million tonnes grading 2 grams gold and 46.1 grams silver per tonne, 1.9% copper and 7.1% zinc — an increase of 11,400 tonnes. Contributing to the rise were improvements in silver and zinc grades.

Exploration and infill drilling, carried out last year, resulted in significant increases for two zones. The Gopher zone, situated on the southern edge of the zinc-rich Battle zone, contains proven and probable reserves of 330,500 tonnes grading 1.2 grams gold, 17.1 grams silver, 2.3% copper and 13.1% zinc — up from 1993 year-end reserves of 150,300 tonnes averaging 0.9 grams gold, 15.1 grams silver, 2.3% copper and 10% zinc. Westmin expects to bring Gopher into production in the second quarter. The Trumpeter zone hosts proven and probable reserves at 227,900 tonnes grading 3.1 grams gold, 66.7 grams silver, 4.1% copper and 4.4% zinc. In the previous year-end period, it contained 61,200 tonnes grading 3.2 grams gold, 68.9 grams silver, 6.3% copper and 4.6% zinc. Ongoing drilling continues to expand this structure.

Since startup in 1966, Myra Falls has produced 14.5 million tonnes of ore averaging 2.1 grams gold, 61.7 grams silver, 1.8% copper and 5.5% zinc.
