The David Money Memorial Medal for geological excellence was presented to Douglas Arantes, exploration manager for Western Mining in Brazil.
Arantes is the first recipient of the medal, which is struck of gold-plated Falconbridge nickel. It was presented to him at a ceremony held at the Department of Geological Sciences at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont.
The medal is in memory of David Money, a Falconbridge employee who died in an automobile accident northeast of Sudbury, Ont., in 1994. He was 29.
Falconbridge Exploration Manager Anthony Green, together with several colleagues and friends, donated funds, which were matched by the company. Twenty medals were struck, to be presented annually to the best MinEx master’s student at Queen’s.
David Money had completed his masters degree in the MinEx program at Queen’s in 1992, on a year’s leave from Falconbridge. The prize includes a cheque for $500,000.
The medal was presented by Robert Mason, director of the mineral exploration program at Queen’s.
