West takes East back to school in MM2000 contest

Team West beat Team East 11-0 in a friendly hockey game for industry professionals held during the Mining Millennium 2000 convention in Toronto.

Tom Schroeter, Western squad captain and geologist at the British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines, cited excellent play by West goalie Rick Mazur of Impact Minerals in the victory. “[Mazur] was the real difference,” Schroeter said following the team’s win at Maple Leaf Gardens (which was built with funds provided by Canadian mining pioneer John Bickell).

Of a missed penalty shot by the game’s only female player, Wolverton Securities’ Tracy Hurley, Schroeter says she had a “great deke . . . Maybe next year.”

The event, billed as the 11th annual Norman B. Keevil Sr. Memorial Game, is held every year during the convention of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada.

The winners were presented with a trophy by Fred Daley, vice-president of exploration for Teck, the game’s sponsor.
