The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum will host a morning panel on mining and the environment on April 26 in Toronto. The event is part of the institute’s annual conference, which runs April 24-27 at the city’s Convention Centre.
The panel is expected to discuss environmental standards, permitting, land access, reporting requirements, design standards, and reclamation.
Among the panellists will be: Peter Lighthall, senior geotechnical consultant at AMEC Earth and Environmental in Vancouver; Paul Wilkinson, professor of environmental studies at York University; David Richards, principal advisor, environment, at Rio Tinto; Prof. Ward Wilson, an expert on mining waste management who teaches at the University of British Columbia’s Department of Mining Waste Management; and Ken Reimer, director of the Environmental Sciences Group at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ont.
Representatives of non-governmental organizations have also been invited to participate.
CBC journalist and correspondent Wendy Mesley will be the moderator.
The convention will also include sessions on sustainability, management of solid wastes, acid-rock drainage, and biodiversity.
