Vancouver – Western Canadian Coal (WTN-V) has received a permit for its Wolverine coal mine in northeast British Columbia under the B.C. Mines Act.
Clearing all environmental, surrounding community and First Nations considerations, the mine permit approves the mine plan and reclamation program for the new coal mine near Tumbler Ridge.
The permit allows for the production of 1.6 million tonnes of coking coal per year. The project is estimated to cost the company $180 million to build and operate.
“Receipt of the Wolverine Mine permit is another step in achieving our goal to produce at the rate of 5 million tonnes per year by 2008,” President Gary Livingstone said.
WCCC aims to produce 5 million tonnes of coal per year by 2008. The coal will comprise 3 million tonnes of hard coking coal from the Wolverine group and 2 million tonnes classified as low volatile pulver coal injection from the Brazion group.
Anticipated to create over 200 full-time construction and operational phase jobs, the project is expected to bring much needed economic benefits to the surrounding communities of Tumbler Ridge, Chetwynd and Dawson Creek.
The company had received its certificate from the province’s Environmental Assessment Office in January.
