The “Cyprus Amax Story” will be the topic of an address by David Watkins at the Dec. 8 luncheon of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
Watkins, senior vice-president exploration of Cyprus Amax Minerals of Colorado, worked formerly for Minnova Inc. when that base metal producer was owned by Metall Mining (and, before that company, by Noranda). Watkins’ primary responsibility at Cyprus Amax is managing and directing its international exploration program.
A leading U.S. copper and coal producer, Cyprus Amax is the world’s largest producer of molybdenum and lithium; it is also a major gold producer. The company was formed by the merger, in 1993, of Cyprus Minerals and Amax Inc. Cyprus Amax is active in South America, where it is developing the Chilean El Abra project for low-cost copper production. Also, expansion plans are in the works for the company’s Cerro Verde copper project in Peru.
A graduate of Queen’s University in 1967, Watkins earned a master’s degree in geology from Carleton University in 1970.
His address will serve as the 15th Hamilton lecture, an annual event inaugurated by the CIM Toronto branch as a tribute to brothers Robert and Philip Hamilton.
