The mine water was being transported by pipeline from the Collins Bay B open pit mine to the mill for treatment prior to its release. A faulty valve is blamed for the accident. The water overflowed a catchment basin and made its way to Collins Creek, which was partially frozen. Contaminated soil has been removed and water samples taken.
Rabbit Lake is about 800 km north of Saskatoon. Cameco is jointly owned by the Saskatchewan and Canadian governments.
