WAMIC `fiesta’ raises funds for bursaries, charity

Sunny weather and higher than normal attendance helped the Women’s Association of the Mining Industry of Canada raise funds for bursaries, scholarships and charities at its annual picnic Sept. 7.

“It was a great success, financially and every way,” said Ginnie Cooke, convenor of the event. “It brought a lot of people together for a common goal and we had a lot of fun doing it.”

About 1,000 attended the picnic, held at Dennis and Heather Sheehan’s farm near Caledon East, Ont. Based on a Mexican theme, the “fiesta” featured Mexican food, entertainment and children’s games. A volleyball tournament was won by a team fielded by Kilborn Ltd.

Winners of the raffle (No. 816603) were: Pat Grant (ticket number 0505), a 1-week trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Gord Fancy (1790), a Canon Camcorder; Marilyn Holt (0629), a pewter bowl; Frank Lutka (1740), a 1-oz. gold wafer; Ken Hill (0612), a dinner for two at Auberge du Pommier.
