This estimate is up from the 2.7-million tonnes defined previously. The zinc grade in the old reserve was slightly higher at 8.9%. The positive exploration results have prompted the partners to start a prefeasibility study. “The prefeasibility study will be commissioned this week,” Mario Caron, president of VSM told The Northern Miner.
An underground exploration program will be considered by the study, Caron added. If recommended, which Caron suggests is likely, then shaft sinking followed by underground sampling and drilling would begin sometime next year.
The bulk of the reserves is confined to two zones known as horizon III and horizon IV. Probable reserves in the two zones total 1.8 million tonnes grading 8.5% zinc, 0.46% copper, 0.18% lead and 42.18 g silver. Another 3.8 million tonnes is classified as a possible reserve in both zones. The remaining 504,000 tonnes is in the nearby Grevet B deposit.
Drilling is continuing until year- end with two drill rigs. This work is testing the III zone as well as other showings on the property.
