Market activity on the Vancouver Stock Exchange increased during 1992, with both higher volume and value reported.
Total volume trading in 1992 reached almost 3.9 billion shares compared with about 3.7 billion in 1991. The value of shares trading over the recent period amounted to about $3.57 billion, up from $3.47 billion in 1991. The increase in activity is attributed to the commercial-industrial sector early in the year and the resource sector in the fourth quarter, reflecting accelerating activity in diamond-related issues.
Diamond action helped the resource index post a 50% increase to the 684 level while the composite index closed up about 17% to 642.59, compensating for an 18% drop in the commercial-industrial index to the 822 level. Financings on the Vancouver Stock Exchange were up about 16% to $395 million with resource issues making up about 53% of the total.
Daily volume during the year averaged 15.4 million shares for a value of about $14.1 million compared with 1991 levels of 14.6 million shares valued at an average of $13.8 million.
