Richard Garnett, a director of Diamond Fields Resources, will discuss the discovery and development of Labrador’s Voisey Bay project at a luncheon meeting on Sept. 21. The event will be hosted by the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM).
First recognized in 1993 as being copper-bearing, the Voisey Bay “Discovery Hill” deposit in Labrador was subsequently revealed to contain high-grade showings of nickel, copper and cobalt.
The deposit contains 32 million tonnes of open-pit reserves, and a feasibility study for the mine and mill is scheduled to be completed in mid-1996. Another study, expected later, will determine the optimum metallurgical route.
Garnett’s presentation will cover the discovery of the deposit, its present status, and the involvement of two major companies, Inco and Teck, in its future development.
Garnett is a mining engineer whose early career included a stint with the Rio Tinto Zinc group. For several years thereafter, he was based mainly in South Africa. Until 1987, he was a division manager in the Anglo American group of companies with responsibility for international exploration and project development.
After moving to North America, Garnett was appointed a vice-president of Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting. He is currently chairman of Birch Mountain Minerals, and provides a consulting service through Valrik Enterprises.
