Fifteen holes (2,200 metres) were drilled on the Roberto zone, highlighted by intersections from four holes: 18.85 grams gold per tonne over 13 metres (all true widths); 27.77 grams over 2.8 metres; 20.7 grams over 4 metres; and 22.9 grams over 3.2 metres.
Ten other holes graded from 7 to 18.1 grams gold over true widths of 2.5-14 metres.
The Roberto zone has been intersected over a 200-metre strike length and to a vertical depth of 125 metres. The zone strikes north, dips about 80 toward the east, and is open in all directions. Surface channel samples have extended the zone another 100 metres.
Mineralization is hosted in silicified sediments at the margin of a diorite intrusion. Gold is associated with up to 5% disseminated arsenopyrite plus pyrrhotite. Visible gold is not common.
Paul Archer, Virginia’s vice-president of exploration, says what’s encouraging at Roberto are the continuity of grade and the elevated gold values over many metres.
To the south, the zone is overlain by a lake. Once the lake is frozen, drilling will test this area.
New channel samples assayed up to 6 grams gold per tonne over 6 metres (included in a 24-metre intercept that grades 2.8 grams). Another graded 8.4 grams gold over 6 metres, including a 2-metre section of 23.4 grams.
The Roberto Est zone is exposed about 50 metres east of the Roberto zone. It has been traced in trenches for about 200 metres along strike.
Drilling intersected this zone at shallow depth above the Roberto zone. Highlights include 2 metres grading 10.4 grams gold at a down-hole depth of 5 metres and 5 metres of 7.7 grams at a down-hole depth of 52 metres. Assays for four holes are pending. Drilling is ongoing.
The 176-sq.-km project is one of several that Virginia Gold is exploring in the James Bay region.
