Virginia enlarges Roberto gold zone

Drilling by Virginia Gold Mines (VIA-T) has extended the known strike length and depth of the Roberto zone on the lonore project, in the Opinaca reservoir area of the James Bay region, Que.

Hole 98 intersected 2.1 metres (at 393.5 metres down-hole) grading 14 grams gold per tonne, followed by 2.25 metres (at 462 metres down-hole) grading 15.8 grams gold and 4.25 metres (at 479 metres down-hole) of 12.3 grams gold.

The hole cut the zone to a vertical depth of 380 metres.

All intersections are calculated true widths.

The highest grade, 62.7 grams gold over 2.25 metres (at 77 metres down-hole), was cut in hole 39 in a zone of biotite alteration. Eighty metres farther down-hole, an intercept graded 6.1 grams gold over 1.8 metres. This hole, as well as two others, tested the zone’s northern extension.

Hole 40 was drilled to undercut this intercept; it cut pegmatite rather than the biotite zone, followed by 0.9 metre grading 1.1 grams gold.

Hole 92, drilled at the southeastern end of the zone and more than 1 km along strike of hole 39, intersected 9 metres (at 219 metres down-hole) grading 9.3 grams gold, followed by a 1.5-metre interval grading 23.7 grams gold at 297.5 metres down-hole.

Hole 93 was abandoned at 146 metres because it was deviating from its proposed target. Hole 94 was drilled in its stead, cutting the Roberto zone at a vertical depth of 360 metres; the intercept graded 9.9 grams gold over 3.5 metres.

Three holes that cut the zone in the southeastern extension region graded between 5.9 and 10.4 grams gold over 1.5-7.5 metres. One also intersected up to 6.1 grams gold over 4.5 metres.

One of the holes drilled farthest east along strike intersected 0.5 metre grading 4.3 grams gold.

Ten holes varying 204-550 metres long tested the area.

Hole 42, drilled 50 metres north of hole 40, is the most northerly hole drilled along strike. It failed to cut mineralization and intersected a fault zone characterized by numerous pegmatite dykes.

The company plans to drill farther north to see if the zones continue on the other side of this faulted area. Anomalous angular boulders grading up to 6.3 grams gold have been found 100 metres north of hole 42.

One drill rig is testing the area, though two more will be added in June. The company does not plan to calculate a resource before year-end.

To date, the Roberto zone has been intersected over a lateral distance of 1.2 km.
