FPX Nickel (TSX-V: FPX; US-OTC: FPOCF) is preparing to submit an initial project description this quarter to start the environmental assessment (EA) for its Baptiste nickel project in central British Columbia, CEO Martin Turenne says.
A recent large-scale pilot run produced a high-grade, low-impurity concentrate that the executive says can bypass smelting and feed both stainless steel and battery supply chains.
“We’re doing something that’s a first of its kind in developing an awaruite nickel deposit,” Turenne told The Northern Miner’s Western Editor, Henry Lazenby, on the sidelines of the Precious Metals Summit last month in Beaver Creek, Colo. “It’s a disruptive, innovative new source of nickel that will help the world diversify away from Chinese, Russian and Indonesian sources,” he said.
The latest work entails FPX’s fourth pilot plant run, confirming bench-scale tests that recover a 60% nickel concentrate with low sulphur and waste elements. FPX has been sharing samples of both nickel sulphate and concentrate with potential downstream partners to advance offtake talks, Turenne said. The project completed a pre-feasibility study last year, with early feasibility work underway and additional drilling this summer to support permitting and engineering.
