Video: Why one contrarian mining investor prefers Australia over North America

Commodity Discovery Fund Willem Middelkoop talks to TNM's western editor, Henry Lazenby.

Australia offers true discovery potential whereas “every rock seems to be turned three times” in North America, Commodity Discovery Fund founder Willem Middelkoop said in an interview.

The Netherlands-based investor offers a contrarian take on the industry, criticizing the investing community’s heavy focus on North American resource companies, with many projects “being just recycled old stories.” Instead, he sees better opportunities in Australia, where his fund invests 30% of its US$130 million pot for exploration.

“We’ve learned over the years that Australia offers some of the best opportunities for new discoveries, which is why we commit a significant portion of our investments there,” Middelkoop said last month during the Gold Forum Americas in Colorado Springs.

Middelkoop sees the market in the early stages of a “generational new bull market” that could last five to 10 years, driven by production shortages and global shifts. “The strength and the length of this bull market will surprise people,” he said.

Middelkoop also believes the sector needs a “shakeout,” where weaker companies should be allowed to fail.
