Water is available on site from an underground aquifer and the company’s requirements are not expected to adversely effect other water users in the region. Public hearings will be held in nearby communities beginning Apr 18, the company noted.
Located in a remote area of eastern San Bernardino Cty., about 18 miles southeast of Searchlight, Nev., the Castle Mountain property has experienced periodic mining booms ever since it was mined for gold at the turn of the century and later for its clay.
Viceroy’s proposal includes the processing of up to three million tons of ore annually using heap leach technology to extract gold from the ore. The mine is expected to employ 125 people over its 10 year life and generate state and federal tax revenues of approximately $60 million.
