Vancouver Stock Exchange Index flirts with 2000 mark

For the first time ever, Vancouver’s market index breached the 2,000 mark although it’s dropped back slightly and is now hovering around 1990. Trading volume has slipped somewhat but it’s still heavy and yesterday’s turnover was 24.8 million shares.

Among the active issues today was Comanche Petroleum which was unchanged at 55c.The company has oil and gas holdings in Oklahoma and Tennesse. At last report it was negotiating an acquisition in the Middle East. Island Canyon Mines, which is taking over a research company involved in sound transmission, was 1 cents stronger at 96 cents .

Alotta Resources, which will be working on a number of U.S. gold properties this year, climbed 9 cents to $1.79 while Diamond Resources was ahead 5 cents to 85 cents . Diamond recently arranged a private placement to retire existing debt and carry out recommended exploration on its Queen Charlotte Island gold property.

Over our report period, Veronex Resources posted one of the largest single gains. The stock jumped $2.75 to $10. Veronex has onshore wells in the Enim field on South Sumatra. Rising $1.60 to $4.80 was All-North Resources which will be mounting a major exploration program this year on its Wellgreen property in the southwest Yukon. Chevron is also involved in the project. Aviva was the volume leader with a turnover of 1.6 million shares. The stock was up 3 cents to 73 cents . Aviva recently concluded an agreement to acquire Variable Speech Control Company through an amalgamation.

Gaining $1.50 to $6.50 was Tundra Gold which is involved with Teck Corp. in the exploration of its Lamaque mine property in northwestern Quebec. Centurion Minerals, which was recently listed on NASDAQ and has a placer gold property in California near feasibility closed $1.50 stronger at $15.75.

Delaware Resources, which has property near Skyline Explorations in northwestern, B.C. shot up 85 cents to $5.00 and Cutty Resources closed the week 45 cents better at $2.50. Cutty has received an exploration proposal for its Mount Armour property near Barriere, B.C. from Minnova Inc. (formerly Falconbridge Copper).

New listings for the week included: Royal Crystal Resources, Overseas Platinum, Golden Trend Energy, Tatlar Resources, International Potential Explorations (formerly Skybridge International), MTC Electronic Technologies (formerly Caldera Mines), International Dorado Resources, Gametek Systems (formerly Basin Pete), Ice Factory Inc. (formerly Little Lake), Englefield Resources, Baywest Capital (formerly Westam Oil) and Delcorp Resources (formerly Canfic Resources).
