UWO raising funds for Fyfe chair

The scientific career of one of the country’s greatest living geologists is to be commemorated by an endowed research and teaching chair in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Western Ontario (UWO).

The new chair, to be named the William Fyfe Chair in Natural Resources and the Environment, will be held for a 7-year term by a professor “of international perspective and stature.” The holder will concentrate on research into exploring, developing and managing natural resources.

Fyfe, now an emeritus professor at the university, taught at the Universities of California and Manchester before coming to UWO to head its department of geology in 1972. He has written five books and more than 800 papers in the earth sciences, and served as president of the International Union of Geological Sciences from 1992 to 1996. He is renowned as a science educator and a public ambassador for the sciences. The professorship will be maintained out of the interest on a $2-million endowment the university is currently raising.

The department is holding a dinner at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto on March 13, to coincide with the annual meeting of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. Well-known geologist R.W. Hutchinson, a former UWO professor, will be the host, and tickets ($200 each, which includes a $125 donation to endow the Fyfe Chair) are available from the department of earth sciences, University of Western Ontario, London, Ont.
