The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the American Geological Institute will develop a comprehensive DVD-based atlas of the world for use in American schools.
The global USGS Geographic Information System database will contain information on elevation, landcover, seismicity, and resources of minerals and energy.
The atlas will also feature information on political boundaries, locations of cities and towns, population density, geology, slope, hydrology, ecological regions, volcanoes, ore deposits, and climate.
The partners anticipate that additional educational materials will be developed in several phases.
The American Geological Institute is a non-profit federation of 40 geoscience professional associations representing more than 100,000 geoscientists in the U.S.
