Vancouver — Despite uranium spot prices falling back from mid-2007’s of almost US$140 per lb., the metal is still garnering strong exploration interest at its more recent price of US$71 per lb.
The “price correction” has, however, substantially eroded the fat market premium enjoyed by uranium explorers earlier that year.
The sector has also seen several mergers the past few years as senior and upstart producers, as well as explorers, strive for that critical mass of pounds in the ground and an expanded exploration footprint.
Northern Saskatchewan’s Athabasca basin, Labrador’s Central Mineral Belt, Quebec’s Otish Mountain area and the Thelon basin in Nunavut remain active uranium exploration camps in Canada — although northern Ontario’s Sibley basin and the Yukon’s Wernecke Mountain area have also become popular targets.
The southwestern U. S. continues to attract attention — particularly Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona for their potential in-situ leach (ISL) deposits. Nevada has also seen considerable exploration for the energy metal.
Argentina and Peru remain dominant addresses in South American uranium exploration, while Africa continues to be a popular locale with companies looking to test for additional yellowcake within the producing countries of Niger and Namibia.
Considerable exploration is also taking place in Australia, Mongolia and Scandinavia.
