Umex studying Thierry deposit

Frederick Felder, vice-president of Umex, said no decision to reopen the past-producing Thierry mine has been made. He said rumors currently circulating to that effect are incorrect.

“We have been conducting some studies on the Thierry deposit, but it would be premature to say we have any concrete production plans at this point,” he told The Northern Miner.

Sources in the Pickle Lake camp report there have been recent rumors about a possible reopening of the Thierry mine. The underground operation closed in 1982 due to low copper-nickel prices. The grade of ore extracted from the mine before it closed averaged 1.6% copper and 0.2% nickel. Umex said the recent rumors have resulted in some inquiries to the company from miners looking for employment.
