U. S. equity markets continued their upswing in the Sept. 8-14 reporting period with the Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining 129.46 points or 1.36% to finish at 9,626.8, while the S&P 500 index advanced 23.95 points or 2.34% to close at 1,049.34. The Nasdaq rose 54.01 points or 2.65% to close at 2,091.78.
Barrick Gold was the most actively traded stock with news of its $4-billion financing to trim its hedge book. The dilutive move sent the gold major’s share price down US$2.65 to close at US$37.39 on a trading volume of roughly 133 million shares. Under the bought-deal financing, Barrick will sell 109 million shares at US$36.95 apiece. It plans to use US$1.9 billion from the offering to eliminate all of its fixed-priced gold contracts or hedges within the next 12 months and about US$2 billion to eliminate a portion of its floating spot price gold contracts.
Rio Tinto was the other big newsmaker during the reporting period — topping the list of value gains with an advance of US$13.72 per share to US$173.57. The Anglo-Australian mining giant announced that it was further trimming debt with a plan to sell a 56% stake in the cable division of its Alcan engineered products unit to U. S. investment firm Platinum Equity for an undisclosed sum. Rio also announced on the same day that Brazil’s National Defence Council had officially approved its US$750-million sale of the Corumba iron ore mine to Brazil’s Vale.
Alcoa was the second most actively traded stock with about 110 million shares changing hands. The aluminum giant declared that it had moved into the top quartile in low-cost production with the opening of its Juruti bauxite mine in Brazil. The
Juruti operations, in which Alcoa holds a 60% stake, are made up of a port facility, a mine and a 50-km rail system.
The gold spot price moved to a New York close of US$999.60 per oz. from US$996.70. The Amex Gold Bugs index rose 7.04 points or 1.71% to finish at 419.57, while the Philadelphia Gold and Silver index inched up by 0.54 points or 0.32% to 167.02. Freeport-Mc-MoRan Copper & Gold was the only gold company to increase significantly, rising US$4.62 per share to close at US$70.62.
