The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a 13-month high on Nov. 9, after finance ministers and central bankers from the G-20 nations meeting in Scotland pledged to maintain public support for their economies as the recovery takes hold. The DJIA gained 455.03 points or 4.7% during the Nov. 3-9 reporting period, closing at 10,226.94. The S&P 500 index added 47.7 points or 4.6% to 1,093.08 and the Nasdaq rose 96.75 points or 4.7% to finish at 2,154.06.
The price of gold continued its ascent, moving from US$1,084.30 per oz. to US$1,102.90. The Amex Gold Bugs index followed suit with an advance of 33.43 points or 7.8%, while the Philadelphia Gold and Silver index rose 7.4% or 12.51 points to 180.85.
Among the gold majors, Randgold Resources posted the largest gain — rising US$10.85 to close at US$78.85 — partly on news that together with AngloGold Ashanti, it will buy an additional 20% stake in the Moto gold project from Congolese partner Office des Mines d’Or de Kilo-Moto. Randgold says it will pay its 50% share of the additional US$113.6 million from existing cash resources. Randgold has also said that it will fast-track its Gounkoto project in Mali, with a prefeasibility study due by the end of the first quarter of 2010.
Positive third-quarter results buoyed Newmont Mining and Goldcorp. Newmont advanced US$6.99 to US$50.56 per share. At the end of October, the company posted record quarterly revenues of US$2 billion and net cash from operations of US$1.1 billion, an increase of more than 400% over the third quarter of 2008. Net income reached US$388 million or US79¢ per share, compared with US$191 million or US42¢ per share in the year-ago quarter.
Goldcorp was up US$6.86 per share to US$44 after posting its third-quarter results on Nov. 4. Gold production increased to 621,100 oz. at a total cash cost of US$295 per oz. on a byproduct basis and US$384 per oz. on a coproduct basis. Adjusted net earnings reached US$140.6 million, or US19¢ per share, compared with US$64.7 million or US9¢ per share, in the third quarter of 2008.
