Over the Nov. 10-16 reporting period, the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 159.99 points or 1.56% to finish at 10,406.96, while the S&P 500 index added 16.29 points or 1.49% to 1,109.3.
Gold prices gained US$34 per oz. — moving from a close of US$1,105.80 on Nov. 10 to US$1,139.80 on Nov. 16. The Amex Gold Bugs index rose 15.06 points or 3.3% to close at 475.53 points, while the Philadelphia Gold and Silver index increased 5.09 points of 2.8% to 186.27.
The big news on the precious metals front was Goldcorp’s $238-million takeover bid for Canplats Resources. Canplats owns the Camino Rojo polymetallic project, 50 km southeast of Goldcorp’s Penasquito mine in Mexico’s Zacatecas state. Goldcorp shares rose US65¢ to US$44.65 per share during the week, with 55.2 million shares trading hands.
It was Randgold Resources, however, that for the second week running retained the crown in the gold space, surging US$5.03 per share to US$83.88. Randgold is still basking in the news that it plans to fast-track its Gounkoto project in Mali after a first resource and scoping study confirmed economics that surpassed its hurdle rates. The project has an inferred resource of 2.65 million oz. gold at a grade of 6.3 grams gold per tonne.
The biggest advance during the reporting period was Rio Tinto, which gained US$16.07 to finish at US$220.80 per share. On Nov. 12, the global mining giant announced it was launching a mining technology development alliance with Codelco. The Rio de Cobre alliance will allow both companies to jointly pursue next-generation copper mining and processing technology development.
Another top performer was Cliffs Natural Resources, which added US$5.57 to US$43.37 per share. It announced an increase in its quarterly cash dividend to US8.75¢ per share. (Cliffs had cut its quarterly cash dividend to US4¢ per share in May.) The company also announced that its subsidiary RenewaFuel has approved a construction plan for a next-generation biomass fuel production facility in Michigan.
