The U.S. National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum plans to begin work soon on a US$788,000 renovation and new construction project.
The Hall occupies a 3-storey Victorian schoolhouse in Leadville, Colo., the core section of which dates from 1896.
The project, to be completed by the autumn of this year, will include street-widening and paving in front of the building; sidewalks, street-lighting and landscaping; ramps for handicapped access; a front facade in a Victorian motif; and a new metal roof. Also, the gymnasium area of a former high school will be converted into a convention and conference centre. The federal Economic Development Administration recently approved a grant of US$510,400 for the project.
The Hall first occupied the building in 1987 under a lease in perpetuity from the Lake Cty. School District. The operation includes 12 rooms of mineral displays and exhibits, a walk-through replica of an underground hard-rock mine and the Mining Hall of Fame which honors more than 100 inductees.
