The ever-active student chapter of the Society of Economic Geologists at the University of Toronto has arranged a short course on exploration for volcanogenic masive sulphide deposits for March 9.
Entitled “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about VMS Exploration,” the course will cover concepts and models for VMS exploration, followed by a series of case studies on recent VMS base metal discoveries.
Scheduled speakers include Gerald Riverin of Inmet Mining, who will discuss the economic framework of VMS exploration; Tucker Barrie of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), who will outline applications of heat- and fluid-flow models in VMS exploration; James Franklin, consulting geologist and former chief scientist at the GSC; Harold Gibson of Laurentian University; Frank Santaguida of Carleton University; and Eric Hoffman of Activation Laboratories.
Two case histories are also scheduled: Mark Rebagliati of the Hunter-Dickinson group will present a paper on the discovery of the Campo Morado deposits in Mexico, and Michael Collison of Falconbridge will discuss the geology of the Kidd Creek deposit’s Deep Zone, currently being developed.
