The University of Toronto will establish the Lassonde Program in Geological and Mining Engineering, following receipt of $5 million from Pierre Lassonde, president of twin companies Franco-Nevada Mining and Euro-Nevada Mining.
The donation will be used to establish new positions, create student scholarships and bursaries, and hire new faculty.
“It’s time we realized that Canada’s most important resource is not nickel, gold or silver, but its people,” Lassonde said at a recent joint luncheon of the Prospectors & Developers of Canada and the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
He said he hoped the donation “would reaffirm the world-class stature of Toronto as a mining and financing centre.”
A portion of the funds will be used to establish a home for the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in the university’s Mining Building.
