A plane crash near Iamgold’s (IMG-T, IAG-N)Niobec mine in Quebec’s Saguenay region has left two flight crew members dead and two passengers in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The passengers are employees at the Niobec niobium mine. Iamgold says they weren’t on duty at the time of the crash.
“They are still in hospital but are in good humour and have good spirits, and as far as we know, are on the road to recovery,” says Tamara Brown, Iamgold’s director of investor relations.
The plane, a Beechcraft King Air 100, was en route from Val d’Or to St. Honor, Que., when it went down around 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, according to a CBC report.
The pilot and co-pilot were in contact with air traffic control at Canadian Forces Base Bagotville between 10:30 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.
Rescuers did not find the accident site until 4:45 a.m.
Canadian Forces Base Trenton received a signal from an emergency transmitter located on the plane and contacted Bagotville.
A Hercules airplane from Trenton and a Griffon helicopter from Bagotville were used in the search and rescue operation.
The passengers were conscious during the search. One of them called 911 on a cell phone but because the windows of the plane were covered in snow, he couldn’t provide rescuers with a description of the crash location.
The region was engulfed in a major snowstorm with strong winds. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
