Following up on some earlier success,
Two trenches measuring 23.8 and 16.4 metres exposed unweathered bedrock kimberlite on Pipe 1. Seven samples weighing 412 kg were taken from the first trench and 4 samples amounting to 380 kg were collected from the second trench. Another 95 kg of random samples were taken from weathered kimberlite on the surface.
Seven samples from a 24.3-metre trench driven into fresh bedrock in Pipe 2 weighed in at 474 kg. A total of 86 kg of random samples of weathered kimberlite were also collected from the surface. Another 120 kg of weathered and fragmented kimberlite were collected from pipes 3, 4 and 5.
Diamond extraction performed on the samples by Lakefield Research yielded at total of 681 diamonds, 62 macrodiamonds (exceeding 0.5 mm in at least one dimension). Of those, 29 measure more than 1 mm along their largest dimension. The largest diamond came from Pipe 2 and weighed in at 0.77 carats.
Pipe 1 yielded a total of 37 macros and 359 micros. Pipe 2 returned 16 macros and 143 micros. Pipes 3, 4 and 5 returned 9 macros and 117 micros. Most of the stones are classified as gem quality and are white and transparent. Fifteen of the diamonds are transparent with colours ranging from pink to amber.
Previously, partial results from Pipe 3 produced five macrodiamonds from a 160-kg sample, while Pipe 5 yielded three macros from a smaller sample (T.N.M. Dec. 4-10).
Dallas Davis, Twin Mining’s director of Diamond Mining said, “finding diamonds of gem size and gem quality in the very first and small sample is uncommon and extremely encouraging.”
Twin Mining recently completed the acquisition of claims totalling 71.3-sq.-km on the Brodeur Peninsula, Baffin Island, from privately held Helix Resources. Helix retains a 1% gross royalty and a 5% net profits interest on the property. Twin acquired the property by spending $50,000 in cash and issuing 30,000 common shares.
