Tundra

Described as Canada’s largest undeveloped gold resource, the Tundra deposit is reported to host potential reserves of some 32 million tons grading 0.20 oz gold per ton. The deposit is located 130 miles northeast of Yellowknife, N.W.T., where the absence of year- round roads and a harsh climate represent formidable obstacles to owners Noranda Inc. (TSE) and Getty Resources (TSE). Despite its impressive size, the Tundra deposit is not without challenges to its developers. Most of the Tundra gold is associated with arsenopyrite, a mineral which could pose environmental and metallurgical problems. A $35-million-dollar underground exploration program is expected to confirm the continuity and grade of this deposit which contains more than 17 separate mineralized zones hosted by sheared felsic volcanic rocks.
