The TSX Venture Composite Index inched up 1.39 points over the May 27-June 2 trading period to close at 2,651.89.
X-Terra Resources topped two of the charts during the week: its stock surged 572% from 22 a share at the start of the session to $1.48 at the closing bell on June 2. The junior exploration company announced that the Ministry of Natural Resources had confirmed receipt of its application permits for more than 1,200 sq. km in the heart of the Quebec Utica-Barnett-like shale natural gas play in the St. Lawrence lowlands.
Altai Resources was the second-highest value gainer, rising $1.23 per share to $3.59 on no news. The company holds a land package in the Utica shale gas play in the St. Lawrence lowlands. The company raised $1.9 million in a private placement in May, following two private placements in April totalling $3.28 million.
The most actively traded stock during the session was Dumont Nickel, with 23.4 million shares trading hands on no news. It recently acquired a series of mineral properties in Alberta and Saskatchewan to explore and develop near-surface, metal-enriched black shale over a 3,356-sq.-km land position. Dumont says the black shale is enriched in uranium, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, zinc, cadmium, cobalt, silver and gold. Dumont climbed 3 a share to 9.
Yukon Zinc was the second largest volume trader, with 22.3 million shares moving during the period on no news. The company, which owns the fully permitted silver-rich polymetallic Wolverine project in the Yukon, has agreed to a takeover by Jinduicheng Molybdenum Group, a Shanghai-traded molybdenum producer, and Northwest Nonferrous Investment, the government geological bureau for Shanxi state. Yukon Zinc shares remained unchanged, trading at 22 each.
Canasia Industriessaw 21.9 million shares change hands following news that its potash permit applications had received government approval. The permits cover 1,833 sq. km of lands prospective for potash on the Saskatchewan-Alberta border. Canasia’s shares rose 11 to 38 apiece.
Chesapeake Gold rose 55 to close at $6.88 on no news. The company’s major project is its 100%-owned Metates gold deposit in Mexico’s Durango state.
Majestic Gold, meanwhile, was up 85.7% to 13 per share. Majestic has two gold projects in China: Sawayaerdun, in the western region of Xinjiang province in the prolific Tian Shan gold belt, and Song Jiaguo, on the Jiaodong peninsula of Shandong province.
Among the stocks that did not fare as well was SouthGobi Energy Resources. South-Gobi, which has thermal and metallurgical coal projects in Mongolia, dropped $1.86 per share to close at $16.35.
Noront Resourcesalso lost value — falling $1.01 a share to close at $3.57. The company is focused on its significant nickel-copper-platinum-palladium discovery at the Double Eagle project in Ontario, and its Windfall Lake advanced gold project in Quebec.
