TSX VENTURE EXCHANGE -March 30 -April 5

Two strong trading days surrounding the Easter long weekend helped lift the S&P/TSX Venture composite index 59.23 points over the March 30-April 5 trading week. The board closed the period at 1631.46, marking its first trip above 1600 since Jan. 19. Daily trading volumes were high, averaging 123 million.

Despite the board’s significant overall gain, the bull-versus-bears race was very close: 66 Venture-listed companies reached new 52-week share price highs while 65 fell to new lows.

Foundation Resources saw its share price rocket up 274% over the week, reaching 86¢ from just 23¢, on a trading volume of 26 million shares. The junior has only 7.7 million shares outstanding. The frenzied trading came on the back of Foundation’s first drill results out of the Coldstream project near Thunder Bay, Ont., which included 27.3 metres grading 4.88 grams gold per tonne and 47.3 metres carrying 1.3 grams gold. Coldstream is home to an historic copper-silver-gold mine and an historic gold resource, which Foundation is working to prove up to current standards. Foundation is earning a 70% interest in Coldstream from Alto Ventures, which also saw significant trading on the news — Alto moved 27 million shares to gain 4¢, reaching 9¢.

Just edging those two out to become the week’s volume leader was North American Gem, which gained 6¢ to reach 19¢ on 27.3 million shares traded. Investors were pleased about a definitive agreement to buy a fully operational surface coal mine to provide additional feed for the company’s operating tipple facility. North American Gem had been drilling on the site and moving towards the purchase for several months; the company is already working to add a third mine to its Kentucky coal mine roster soon.

Canada Lithium released a prefeasibility study for its Quebec Lithium project on March 22, but it seems investors only took note of the positive study results in early April, when the junior gained 18¢ or 34% in two days to reach 69¢. The study determined a 2,950-tonne-per-day open-pit operation could produce 42.6 million lbs. Li2CO3 annually for US$1.27 per lb. It would cost US$148 million to develop the project and it now carries a pretax net present value of US$325 million, using an 8% discount rate.

Hana Mining continues to pull interesting core from the ground at its Ghanzi sediment-hosted copper-silver project in Botswana. The set of results included mineralized intercepts in all 12 holes drilled and extended the zone’s tested strike length by 1,200 metres to 32.7 km. At the north and south ends of the zone, drills hit pockets of high-grade mineralization, such as 1 metre of 6.59% copper and 153.3 grams silver per tonne and 5 metres of 1.63% copper and 39.5 grams silver. Hana gained 23¢ to reach $1.85.

East Asia Minerals’ share price continued its long ascent, gaining $1 to reach $6.40. The company did not release any news over the week but continues to drill at its Miwah gold discovery in Indonesia.
