TSX VENTURE EXCHANGE -MARCH 16-22

The S&P/TSX Venture composite index lost ground four of five days over March 16-22 to end the week down 6.92 points at 1554.59. Daily trading volumes remained strong over the week, averaging 116 million.

The Venture board’s bulls beat out its bears during the third week of March, as 68 junior companies reached new 52-week share price highs while 61 fell to new lows.

The volume leader for the week was Eagle Hill Exploration, which moved 50 million of its 55 million outstanding shares to end the period down 8¢ at 38¢. The company is exploring the Windfall Lake property in the Abitibi belt of northern Quebec and has hit some impressive gold grades in its first few holes. Eagle Hill released full results for hole 196, which returned 14.2 grams gold per tonne over 52 metres. The company had released partial results earlier.

The tale of Brett Resources is coming to an end, as Osisko Mining offered to acquire the junior in an all-share deal. Brett’s board is recommending shareholders tender to the Osisko offer, which would exchange each Brett share for 0.34 of an Osisko share to value the junior at $308 million, excluding cash on hand. The takeover is aimed at acquiring Brett’s Hammond Reed project in Ontario, home to 6.7 million inferred oz. gold in an openpittable deposit that remains open along strike and at depth. Brett’s share price gained 92¢ on the news to reach a new high of $2.82.

On the back of yet another set of promising drill results from Indonesia, East Asia Minerals continued its spectacular share price climb, closing as high as $5.48 mid-week before settling slightly to $5.13. The Miwah Main zone returned 157 metres grading 1.36 grams gold in hole 21, which terminated in mineralization.

Kinross Gold’s bid to buy Underworld Resources added yet another spark to the firestorm of interest in the Yukon’s White Gold district and Kaminak Gold is profiting nicely from the area play. Kaminak’s Coffee property is just south of Underworld’s land and, despite releasing only limited sampling and trenching results, the company’s share price has climbed to the $1 range from just 10¢ a year ago.

A positive prefeasibility study for the Lindero gold project in Salta province, Argentina, lifted Mansfield Minerals to a new 52-week share price high of $1.75. The study found Lindero could support an open-pit, heap-leach operation for 10 years, recovering an average of 143,000 oz. gold annually. Lindero is home to 101 million proven and probable tonnes grading 0.59 gram gold for 1.92 million oz. gold.

It has been a busy year so far for Prophecy Resources -the junior announced a merger with Red Hill Energy in January, a nickel-copper resource at its Lynn Lake project in Manitoba in February, and a vanadium-titanium resource at its Titan project in Ontario in March. And investors have rewarded the company for its efforts, lifting its share price to a new high every week. In the third week of March, Prophecy reached $1, from less than 10¢ in late 2009.
