TSX Venture Exchange -January 12-18

It was an up-and-down week for the S&P TSX Venture Composite Index over the Jan. 12-18 trading period, with gains almost cancelling losses to leave the board down 3 points at 1606. Daily trading volumes remained strong, averaging 124 million.

Despite a slight overall loss in points, seven times as many Venture-listed companies reached new share price highs over the period as fell to new lows. Specifically, 141 juniors climbed to new 52-week peaks while 19 fell to new lows.

Partners CBR Gold and Heatherdale Resources gained on well-mineralized volcanogenic massive sulphide intercepts from their Niblack project in southeast Alaska. The best result came from hole 33A, which cut 55 metres grading 2.52% copper, 4.53 grams gold per tonne, 4.68% zinc, and 105 grams silver per tonne. CBR added 7¢ to close at 79¢ while Heatherdale gained 16¢ to reach $1.80.

Rainy River Resources also rose on the back of strong drilling news. A hole into the new Beaver Pond zone at the company’s namesake project in northwestern Ontario returned 51 metres grading 42.5 grams gold, while an infill hole in the 433 zone cut 1.5 metres carrying 436 grams gold. The company’s share price climbed 94¢ on the news to close at $5.26, a new high.

Drills probing the high-grade zone below the shallow defined resource at Premium Exploration’s Friday-Petsite project in central Idaho returned some promising intercepts, including 2.66 grams gold over 198 metres and 2.94 grams gold over 73.5 metres. In addition, a dike separating the shallow resource into two zones seems to disappear at depth, creating a continuous zone. Premium’s share price gained 10¢ to hit 54¢.

Victoria Gold also gained on drilling news. A 284-metre intercept starting from surface and grading 2.5 grams gold from the Santa Fe project in Nevada lifted the company’s share price 9¢ to 86¢. Victoria is earning a 70% interest in Santa Fe from Barrick subsidiary Homestake Mining by spending $6.5 million on exploration over six years.

News of a deal to buy the Kayapa copper-gold porphyry project in the Philippines sent Crazy Horse Resources’ share price on a crazy climb, gaining 87.5¢ in a day to close at $1.25. For 6 million shares Crazy Horse will be getting an 8,500-hectare, road-accessible property with a zone of quartz diorite porphyry stock covering 7 sq. km. Historical drilling has returned promising copper oxide intercepts.

Investor confidence is returning to South African platinum group metals (PGM) producer Anooraq Resources. In mid-2009 Anooraq purchased 51% of the Bokoni PGM mines from Anglo Platinum for $385 million. The company used a $105-million debt facility to complete the purchase and recently managed to syndicate that debt, moving 35% to another bank. Anooraq’s share price has gained 73¢ or 81% since the beginning of January to reach $1.63.

And Apoquindo Minerals’ first hole of the season into the Zafranal project boosted its share price 16¢ to $1.03. The hole returned 112 metres grading 0.79% copper.
